What are boundaries?
How do boundaries affect me?
Why do we have boundaries?
Abramovic provokes many questions that relate directly to her big idea (bounds of the body) these essential questions manifest themselves as ideas that explore personal things such as “What are boundaries?” or “How do boundaries affect me?”. On a more global scale the theme bounds of the body can also spark questions such as “Why do we as a society have boundaries?”, which becomes a study in sociology when asking oneself this. All of these questions are certainly open to interpretation and have no single right or wrong answer, they ask people to find their own convictions on human boundaries.
We as college students (and people as a whole), can directly relate to Abramovic’s work because we have explored her big idea in our own ways. We have stayed up as long as we physically could withstand to write papers, we have driven faster than the speed limit, and we have tried to see how much alcohol our blood streams can really take before losing all cognition. These explorations may not have been the same as Marina’s work but they certainly follow her theme of pushing her body physically and mentally to the limits. Marina’s work is directly relatable and very powerful which makes it fascinating to us. We are intrigued by the rhythm found throughout her pieces and how it draws an individual in; wondering where it is or if it will change. She leaves her audiences on the edge of their seats while they wait in eager anticipation to see her fail or succeed. Marina herself walks into a performance unsure of whether her piece will go as planned. As college students we need to accept that the future is uncertain the same way Marina accepts it about her performances.
