Thoughts on Marina:
I knew very little about Marina Abramovic, only of a performance piece where the audience was allowed to do whatever they wanted to her (Rhythm 0). It wasn’t until I saw the HBO documentary Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present that I fell in love with her work. She is a revolutionary in the world of performance art and helped build the path for other female artists. Although her performances can be violent and gory there is a poeticism and simplicity within all of her pieces. I find myself glued to the screen as I watch each performance unfold, waiting to see what she does next. And it makes me look within myself and wonder whether I would be strong enough to do what Marina does. Whether I could make such a lasting impact as she has with many of her audience members. It makes me want to hit the art world hard and make a difference, even if it shocks many. Marina has formed her career on shocking the squeamish and impressing her fellow artists.
