After the break with Ulay, Marina went into a phase of deep pain and confusion. She claimed to have felt ugly and unwanted which resulted in her gaining an interest in fashion and eventually getting a breast augmentation a few years later. To pay the bills she began teaching for a steady income; and although her nomadic ways never ceased, the life that was once in them was decaying. Instead of the old and spontaneous performances she was known for, Marina started to dabble in actual theater work. For quite a few years she participated in this form of performance, and began to work her name back up again. She hired a new gallerist (Sean Kelly) and moved her work to the United States for a while.
Abramovic’s work started taking off again. She combined her theater work with new and old gallery installations and yet again created her own name and identity in the art world; without Ulay. The work done after Ulay had combined all the good elements of Marina’s earlier works and built a completely new category of performance art. It had gone above and beyond all else and to this day, Marina’s third phase of art-making has been in full swing. Throughout her entire career only one constant has remained in Marina’s work; the theme of pushing the bounds of the human body. A theme she can use to connect with herself and with others physically, emotionally, and even spiritually.
