Making statements through art has historically been one of the greatest ways to make an impact on the public. Marina chose a powerful discipline to expose her big idea of bounds of the human body; a discipline that can be applied to all facets of life. Artists before Marina have experimented with the theme of bounds of the human body. Yoko Ono, for example, performed a piece titled “Cut Piece” in 1964 that is reminiscent of Abramovic’s “Rhythm 0”. Both women allowed the audience to participate in the performance and interact with their bodies, pushing them to the limit. Marina took Ono’s piece one step further by allowing the audience a variety of objects to use on her body that brought both pain and pleasure.Abramovic and Ono took themselves out of their comfort zones to make new discoveries about themselves and their boundaries; much like children do.
